Deposit Interest

Principal, annual gross rate, day count and withholding create the net term-deposit return. Nominal growth is not real purchasing power.

Day-based gross return

A simple estimate uses principal × annual gross rate × days/365. Banks may use other day-count conventions; the contract controls.

The deposit calculator produces an illustrative net figure. Do not confuse a monthly campaign quote with an annual gross rate.

Value-date delays around weekends or holidays can shorten effective interest days. Campaign “monthly” quotes also hide compounding and withholding differences. Lock the same start and maturity dates across banks.

Net after withholding

Advertised rates are often gross. Compare credited net interest and end balance after tax. Rates can vary by tenor and product.

Ask whether interest is paid at maturity or periodically; timing changes reinvestment options. Rank products by credited net interest, not by the loudest gross percentage.

Inflation and real return

Nominal balances can rise while purchasing power falls. Read net yield next to an inflation scenario. Not investment advice.

Breakage and rollover

Early withdrawal may forfeit interest. Automatic renewal can reprice. FX deposits add currency risk on top of interest.

Partial withdrawals may reprice the remainder. Auto-rollover can change the rate quietly—check online banking a few days before maturity even if no SMS arrives.

Guarantee limits

Deposit protection is subject to limits and product scope. Do not equate a yield quote with unlimited guarantee coverage.

Comparison discipline

Rank products with the same principal, days and withholding assumptions. Highest gross is not always highest net.

Practical tips

  • Confirm whether the quote is annual gross.
  • Compare net credited interest.
  • Equalise day counts across offers.
  • Read early-break clauses.
  • Set nominal yield beside inflation.

FAQ

Is the rate annual?

Usually it is quoted as annual gross. Convert campaign wording into a comparable annual figure before you rank offers.

What does withholding cut?

Tax is typically taken from gross interest so the account receives net interest. Exact rates depend on product and tenor.

Is return guaranteed?

Term deposits may lock a contractual rate, but early break and rollover can change outcomes. The calculator is not a guarantee.

Can inflation erase yield?

Yes. Real return can be negative even when the nominal balance rises.

FX deposits identical?

Interest math is similar, but currency moves change total results. Track FX separately.
